About Podiatry

What is Podiatry?  Podiatry is the medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle problems.  A Podiatrist functions as part of the medical team much like any other medical specialty.

Podiatric conditions can be divided into thee distinct divisions; medical, structural or functional.

Medical conditions of the feet are much like any other part of the body.  Some medical conditions seen in the feet might be arthritis, skin conditions, ulcerations or wounds.  It is important to be aware that several general medical conditions will often first show signs in your feet.  These can include conditions such as Heart, Lung, Circulatory and Diabetes.  When signs of these systemic conditions are detected appropriate referrals are sought as a part of your total medical team.

Structural foot conditions such as bunions, hammer toes, calluses or corns are problems that not only cause pain but will often progress into more significant problems if not addressed early.  Treatments can vary a great deal.  Some treatments include things like changing shoe style, padding, and devices in the shoes or even surgical correction to stop both pain as well as progression.

Functional conditions can be compared to any mechanical device.  In a car if a tire is out of align then the other tires will eventually be out of alignment and the entire car will ride abnormally.  In people, if we are walking out of align or our gait is in any way abnormal, this will cause strain not only in the feet but often in the ankles, leg, knees, and even the lower back.  Often a simple analysis of your gait or your shoes can confirm this diagnosis.  Typically gait abnormalities can treated with the fabrication of a custom made device to be worn in your shoe.

Remember, Foot Pain is NOT Normal.
